Late at night in mid-October 2022, the DRK facilities experienced a major electrical power outage. The facilities held a truck loaded with blood plasma. At this point, the temperature-sensitive good was cooled via the power grid as usual. However, when the power supply blacked out, the cooling system could no longer be operated from the grid.

Addvolt’s electrical plug-in detected this incident and automatically started supplying the vehicle’s refrigeration machine. This way, the Powerpack prevented the interruption of the cold chain and reliably cooled the blood plasma for about 6 hours, until the power supply from the mains could be restored. Eventually, an entire truckload of a particularly valuable and vital commodity was saved through the use of Addvolt’s system.

For the German Red Cross, compliance with the strict regulations for the transport of blood plasma is a top priority. Frozen plasma must be stored and transported at a temperature of at least -20°C, preferably -27°C. Exceeding these temperatures favors the multiplication of germs. If the cold chain is interrupted for too long, the plasma is no longer safe to use and must be disposed of. To maximize safety, DRK Baden-Baden invests in innovative technologies to reliably maintain the cold chain.
